We are evolving...

We embrace the idea of continuous improvement. To do that, we realise the need to evolve as a function, so we’re advancing our tech stack to support it.

For the main website, we have chosen Groovy on Grails, which uses convention-over-configuration, has sensible defaults and opinionated APIs and is easy for Java developers to learn. It has served us well, we are able to quickly iterate on the product and have scaled up to handle large traffic loads. However, we are gradually bringing in other other, newer and exciting technologies as we decompose the backend into services, such as Django and are developing some in-house tools using Python. We are moving the front end to React and Typescript, using a combination of MySQL, Mongo and Redis in our persistence layer and are building out our data infrastructure with Airflow and Snowflake.

Our tech team isn’t like other tech teams, we speak 15 languages collectively and got into tech for different reasons

In our team, a good idea is a good idea regardless of seniority or time with the business, so everyone feels like their contributions matter. We work collaboratively, embrace things like paired programming and share our awesome brainwaves! Some ideas aren’t so great...one of the team once ate 20 bananas in one sitting following a bet with their line manager. Not the best look!

We genuinely love what we do here. So much so, that counting from the birth of the business in 2011, 11 of the top 14 contributors to the Secret Escapes repository are still here with us.
